(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Tuesday, researchers are putting out the results of the largest study ever done on schizophrenia.

It shows progress that could someday offer more hope to people with the disorder and those genetically pre-disposed to it.

The study found the condition is driven by more than 100 genes so far. But they say there could be a thousand links.

The study was able to confirm genetic links associated to the disorder with the immune system, and several associated with heavy smoking.

Roughly one-percent of the American population suffers from schizophrenia. The brain disorder can lead to agitation, hearing voices and terrifying paranoia.
