Police investigating after 4-year-old girl found dead on her birthday
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is investigating the suspicious death of a 4-year-old girl on what would have been her birthday.
Police aren't saying much at this point, but according to Chief Jeff Hadley no one is in custody at this point and we have not been told the cause of death.
KDPS responded to a call to the 1100 block of Douglas Avenue on a report of a child not breathing around 9:30 Saturday morning. When officers arrived they found a four year old child unresponsive and pronounced her dead at the scene.
The Kalamazoo Crime Lab later was dispatched to the residence where detectives were on scene all day Saturday. There was a heavy police presence along the street and in front of the home that houses two apartments.
We talked with David Durden, the deceased child's grandfather, who said, after talking with police, his understanding is that there was an altercation of some kind in the apartment involving his daughter, who he identifies as Daveeta Walker, and another individual around 4 a.m. and that his 4-year-old granddaughter somehow got caught up in what was taking place inside the apartment.
Durden said, "There was a fight and my grandbaby was in the middle of it."
Durden said he believes his daughter was then placed under arrest on three outstanding warrants. Many unanswered questions tonight as police continue to investigate the suspicious death of a child.
Police said that Saturday was also the little girl's birthday.
Durden said, "I just want justice to be served to whoever did this. I want them to be caught."
