Doc Talk - Treat Your Feet

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The way you treat your feet is important, and if you're wearing the wrong shoes, you could be toeing a troublesome line.

In this week's Doc Talk, Newschannel 3's Erica Mokay speaks with a podiatrist who recommends skipping the stilettos and choosing something a little more comfortable.

"If you don’t have a good foundation under you and good mechanics in your foot, that’s going to translate up to the very next joint and go knee, hip, low back, upper back, neck, shoulders," said Doug Brewer, a podiatrist with Borgess Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, at 2490 S. 11th St. in Kalamazoo.

“Anything that’s going to elevate your foot is going to increasingly add load to the forefoot and cause more instability up the leg and all the way to the back," Brewer said. "If you don’t have the proper alignment, it can cause pain up the entire leg and even into the lower back."

The best option is a study shoe, he said, one that's stiff, in the middle and at the heel in particular. It's important, Brewer said, to choose fit and function over fashion.
