Winter coat drive a smashing success

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Our annual coat drive with the Salvation Army is shaping up to be a big success.

They've already given away about 330 coats Thursday and there are more than a thousand left to give out.

Those at the Salvation Army tell us they have about 1,700 coats for men, women and children, along with warm weather accessories to go with them.

Volunteers are helping people go through to pick the coat that suits them most.

They got all these coats from drop off sites around Kalamazoo County, including our station.

This year they had a shortage of kids coat and put the call out a few weeks ago and West Michigan delivered.

"Children coats are always important because you want to keep them warm when they are going to school and we really got quiet a few of them in which was really a old thing, so it helped us out and we asked for children's coats they responded and the people of Kalamazoo County responded," said Major Keith Welch of the Salvation Army.

The Share the Warmth Coat Drive will be handing out coats through Friday, but you do need a voucher in order to get one, you can't just show up here. Call 269-344-6119 to find out where vouchers can be obtained.

Salvation Army officials tell us if you couldn't help out with this drive the Red Kettle Campaign starts next week.
