Special prosecutor appointed to look into Van Buren Co. Sheriff's clothing purchases

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Newschannel 3 I-Team is learning that a special prosecutor and the Michigan State Police are being brought in to see if a local sheriff committed a crime.

In an I-Team Waste Watch investigation, we broke the news earlier this week that Van Buren County leaders are investigating purchases made by Sheriff Dale Gribler on a county-issued credit card.

Gribler says he purchased $1,100 worth of men's suits within the last three months.

On Thursday, Van Buren County Prosecutor Mike Bedford told Newschannel 3 the case has been sent to the Michigan State Police for investigation, to find out if Sheriff Gribler had the authority to buy the clothes; whether the Sheriff properly reported the expenses; and whether Gribler did, in fact, buy the clothing for himself.

Bedford also says he's asked the State Attorney General's office to appoint a special prosecutor to make a final determination in the case.

Sheriff Gribler admitted to the I-Team this week that he spent more than double his yearly clothing allowance on the suits for himself, but maintained he did it because he hadn't spent any money on clothing the past couple of years.
