Minimum wage workers see Jan. 1 raise

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Minimum wage workers in 13 states got a raise on New Year's Day.

Those states raised their level above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

Some workers say that it helps, but is not enough.

Last month, union groups helped organize fast food workers who want to raise the nationwide minimum wage.

President Obama says it should be $10 per hour, but business owners say that will lead to layoffs.

The National Restaurant Association says that raising the minimum wage will hurt businesses.

Many Republicans in Congress say they will vote against increasing it.
